Elections Matter

Al Gore endorses Barack Obama in Flint, Michigan, a city that alone has lost almost 400,000 jobs since Bush took office.

He is well aware of how much elections matter.

I write this comment with the hope that you will rewatch the speech after browsing my ramblings.

Ok, this is an amazing speech. It's a relatively energetic Al Gore, mixed and restricted by extremely tacky, cheesy and oppressive pro-Obama catch phrases. It's seems exactly as if Gore and his speech writers composed a compelling, humorous and environmentally friendly stump speech only to have it edited and encroached upon, at almost every moment, by one of Obama's bumper sticker interns. Gore's nano-second hint of Obama's energy stance (around 10:45) was so generously general and brief that Gore can't possibly be excited by our future in this country.

Look at the disconnect, througout the speech, between Obama's lack of emotion and Gore's stressed out, yet whole-hearted attempt at an introduction. Meanwhile, the audience is like a hockey crowd, waxing and waning at the site of any excitement from the source of entertainment. In characteric, modern American political form, it's all so theatrical.

Poor Gore. He knows that Obama's environmental rhetoric is woefully deficient, given the current vulnerability of our beloved earth. Especially since there are far more environmentally supportive candidates out there. I marvel at the kind of behind-the-scenes pressure he must be under to endorse the Democratic nominee. Perhaps he does plan on running again and doesn't want to break ties with a party that he perceives to be the home of his last chance to win an election. Or maybe he just has too many connections and doesn't want to be a jerk to all of his peers. Or maybe he thinks that if he doesn't piss off Obama's camp, he will earn an influential spot near the top of the EPA.

I have know idea; but I sense the tension that indicates a personal struggle.
